1950s, 2000s
4-2-2-2 The 4-2-2-2: Brazil’s magic square
Two holding midfielders, two attacking midfielders, two strikers. Brazil used it in 1958 and 1962, and it reappeared at Leverkusen and Monaco in the 2000s as a counter-attacking shape.
Strengths
- Four central attackers overload the middle and create short passing angles.
- Two strikers keep both centre-backs occupied.
- Extremely dangerous on the counter through the middle.
Risks
- No natural width — everything must come through the centre.
- The full-backs are the only wide players, so they must run the whole flank.
How it is played
The two attacking midfielders play as inside forwards, not wingers: they receive between the lines and combine with the strikers. The full-backs provide all the width.
In today’s game
Rarely used as a starting shape today, but the idea survives: two tens behind two strikers is the same geometry with different labels.
