4-3-1-2 The midfield diamond: 4-3-1-2

A narrow diamond of four midfielders — one holder, two box-to-box runners, one number ten — behind two strikers. It won Serie A titles for Milan and Juventus and is still used when a team wants to dominate the centre.

Strengths

  • Four midfielders against three creates a permanent spare man in the centre.
  • Two strikers allow direct play without a wide build-up.
  • The diamond is excellent for keeping the ball under pressure.

Risks

  • The flanks are almost empty — the full-backs must cover both ends.
  • A high, hard press can trap the diamond because there is no wide outlet.

How it is played

The holder sits at the base, the ten at the tip, and the two shuttlers cover the sides of the diamond. The full-backs are the only width, so they must be fit enough to play as wingers.

In today’s game

The diamond has returned as a pressing shape: RB Leipzig and several Serie A sides use it to force opponents into the touchline.
