1980s – today
3-5-2 The 3-5-2: wing-backs as the engine
Three centre-backs, five across the middle, two strikers. The whole system lives or dies on the two wing-backs, who must defend as full-backs and attack as wingers in the same move.
Strengths
- Two strikers mean the team can attack directly without a number ten.
- Three centre-backs give cover when the wing-backs are high.
- The midfield five can overload any four-man midfield.
Risks
- The space behind the wing-backs is the obvious place to attack.
- It needs three healthy centre-backs — most squads do not have them.
How it is played
Build in a back three, let one centre-back carry the ball into midfield, and use the strikers as a pair: one drops, one runs. Wing-backs time their runs to arrive at the far post.
In today’s game
The modern version is a 3-4-2-1 in possession, with two tens behind a striker — the 3-5-2 label survives mainly in the defensive phase.
