1950s – today
4-3-3 The 4-3-3: width, triangles and a lone nine
Three forwards stretch the last line, three midfielders create triangles, and the full-backs provide the width that lets the wingers come inside.
Strengths
- Three forwards occupy both full-backs and both centre-backs at once.
- The midfield triangle gives a free man against any two-man midfield.
- Wingers can attack the half-space, which is where most goals are created.
Risks
- The lone striker can be isolated if the wingers stay wide.
- The two number eights must cover huge distances or the midfield is exposed.
How it is played
Build with a single pivot behind two eights; the wingers start wide and attack the far post. Out of possession the two wide forwards press the full-backs and the shape becomes 4-1-4-1.
In today’s game
The modern 4-3-3 is really a 3-2-5 in possession: one full-back tucks in, the other overlaps, and the pivot becomes a third centre-back.
