5-4-1 The 5-4-1: the low block

Nine outfield players behind the ball, one striker ahead of it. The most defensive shape in common use, and the one that most often produces a famous cup upset.

Strengths

  • The centre of the box is almost impossible to reach.
  • Two banks of four plus a back five leaves no gap between the lines.
  • Perfect for a team that only needs a draw.

Risks

  • The lone striker has no support and the ball keeps coming back.
  • Conceding a set piece is often the only way the block breaks.

How it is played

Stay compact, defend the width of the penalty area, and never press unless the ball goes backwards. The striker’s job is to hold the ball for five seconds.

In today’s game

Elite teams now use it for 15-minute spells rather than 90 minutes — a tool for protecting a result, not a philosophy.
