2010s – today
3-4-1-2 The 3-4-1-2: three at the back with a ten
Three centre-backs, four across the middle with wing-backs, one number ten and two strikers. It gives a team two strikers and a creator without losing defensive solidity.
Strengths
- Two strikers plus a ten means three players in the box.
- The back three covers the space the wing-backs leave.
- Very effective against a back four that likes to build short.
Risks
- The two central midfielders must cover a lot of ground.
- Wing-backs can be pinned back, leaving the strikers isolated.
How it is played
Build with three, let the ten drop to make a midfield four, and attack with the wing-backs arriving late. Atalanta’s version is man-to-man all over the pitch.
In today’s game
One of the few shapes that naturally produces both high pressing and two strikers — which is why it is popular with underdog teams in Europe.
