1990 – 1999
The Champions League, the Bosman ruling and the treble
The European Cup was rebranded with a group stage and a catchy anthem. Jean-Marc Bosman’s court case gave players freedom of contract and rewrote the transfer market. Manchester United completed the first English treble.
Four defining moments
- 1992The Champions League is launched; Denmark win Euro 92 after being invited late.
- 1995The Bosman ruling ends transfer fees for out-of-contract players.
- 1998France win their first World Cup at home; Zidane scores twice in the final.
- 1999Manchester United win the treble with two goals in stoppage time in Barcelona.
Why this decade matters
Bosman is the single most consequential legal decision in football history. It created the free transfer, inflated wages, concentrated talent in rich leagues and made the current squad-building model possible.
