1980 – 1989
Maradona, Milan and the decade that changed stadiums
Diego Maradona produced the most famous goal ever scored and the most infamous one in the same match. Arrigo Sacchi’s Milan made defending collective. Two disasters — Heysel and Hillsborough — forced Europe to rebuild how it watched football.
Four defining moments
- 1984Liverpool win the European Cup on penalties in Rome.
- 1985Heysel: 39 supporters die before the European Cup final; English clubs are banned.
- 1986Maradona’s Hand of God and Goal of the Century knock England out.
- 1989Sacchi’s Milan win the European Cup; Hillsborough leads to all-seater reform.
Why this decade matters
This is the decade football stopped being a standing-room sport. The Taylor Report in England turned terraces into seats, changed ticket prices and, indirectly, created the modern global television product.
