3-4-3 The 3-4-3: pressing with three forwards
Cruyff’s Barcelona and Conte’s Chelsea are the two reference points: three forwards press the back line, three centre-backs cover the whole width, and the middle four must run.
Strengths
- Three forwards can press a back four man-for-man and force long balls.
- The back three covers the width without needing full-backs to stay home.
- Very strong in transition — the front three are already high.
Risks
- The two central midfielders can be outrun by a three-man midfield.
- If the press is beaten, the back three faces a counter-attack alone.
How it is played
Press with the front three inside the opponent’s half; the ball-side wing-back jumps into midfield to make a four. When the ball turns over, the far winger attacks the back post immediately.
In today’s game
Modern 3-4-3 usually means a 3-4-2-1 with two inverted tens, or a 5-2-3 without the ball — the shape is a starting point, never the whole plan.
