1960 – 1969
Catenaccio, wingers and Wembley 1966
Italian coaches turned defending into an art form, Portuguese and Mozambican wingers lit up the European Cup, and England won the World Cup on home soil. Total football had not arrived yet, but the pieces were being assembled in Amsterdam and Lisbon.
Four defining moments
- 1960Real Madrid beat Eintracht Frankfurt 7–3 at Hampden in the greatest final.
- 1963Milan win the European Cup with catenaccio under Nereo Rocco.
- 1966England beat West Germany 4–2 at Wembley; Hurst scores a final hat-trick.
- 1967Celtic’s Lisbon Lions become the first British club to win the European Cup.
Why this decade matters
The 1960s are when the game split into schools: Italian defensive structure, Dutch and Portuguese technical wing play, English directness. Modern punditry is still arguing about the same three approaches.
